MEMBERSHIP:

  Membership in the National Honor Society is both an honor and a responsibility. Students selected for membership are expected to continue to demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership, and character by which they were selected. Members of the National Junior Honor Society do not automatically become members of the National Honor Society.

SELECTION OF MEMBERS:

  Selection for membership is by a majority vote of the Faculty Council appointed by the principal, and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Selection to NHS is a privilege, not a right.  Students do not apply for membership; instead, they provide information to be used to support their candidacy for membership. 

  To be eligible for induction:

  • Candidate must be a sophomore or junior.

  • Candidates must have been in attendance at the school the equivalent of one semester.

  • The selection of members shall be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council appointed by the principal.

  • Candidates must have a minimum cumulative scholastic average of 90 percent with no grade equal or less than 75.

  • Candidates must complete the "Student Activity Information Form" and submit it by the specified date.

  • Candidates shall be evaluated on the basis of their character, service, and leadership. Faculty input will be obtained, however the actual selections are made by the Faculty Council. The Faculty Council may wish to  interview the candidates.

While academic criterion is important and should be considered first, membership is not considered on the basis of grades alone.  Once inducted, attendance, service, leadership and character will be reviewed periodically to maintain membership.

Service:  Members will be required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of service per semester. 10 hrs must be in the NHS Tutoring Program.

Character:  Faculty and staff will be asked to submit written comments by a specified date.  Members will maintain the high level of honesty and integrity expected of an NHS member.  They will exhibit honesty in all academic activities.  Members who do not maintain high levels of academic honesty (e.g. cheating, plagiarism, etc.) and outstanding character will not maintain their standing as a member of NHS.

DISCIPLINE AND DISMISSAL:

Members should understand fully that they are subject to dismissal if they do not maintain the standards of scholarship, leadership, service, and character that were used as a basis for their selection.

Student's records will be reviewed periodically to determine standing of members for compliance with the Society standards. When a member falls below the standards by which he/she was selected, the adviser will inform him/her in writing of the possible consequences (probation or dismissal) of non-improvement. The Faculty Council determines that the facts warrant probation or dismissal. In the case of flagrant violation of school rules or civil laws a member does not necessarily have to be warned. 

Members are only granted one probation. Failure to remediate the violation by the specified time will result in dismissal. A student who is dismissed or who resigns is never again eligible for membership in the NHS.

If the Council determines that the facts warrant consideration of immediate dismissal, the member will be notified in writing of the violation, the possibility of dismissal, and the need for scheduling a hearing with the Faculty Council.  A hearing should then be scheduled. The member should be allowed to appear before the Faculty Council and explain the situation.  A parent/guardian may be present with the member; however, it should be noted that the primary focus of the hearing is to allow the member to present his or her case.

For purposes of dismissal, a majority vote of the Faculty Council is required.

Note: A letter that delineates the members' responsibilities shall be given to every member upon induction and at the beginning of every school year thereafter. Adviser will discuss responsibilities and will answer any questions during a meeting or individually if necessary.

The following guidelines are used in helping define leadership, service, and character: (these are distributed to each faculty member when reviewing candidates, and also should be posted with the Selection criteria and procedures.)

LEADERSHIP

Leadership roles in both the school and community are considered, and must be verifiable.

The student who exercises leadership:

  • Is resourceful in identifying new problems, applying principles, proposing solutions, and making suggestions.

  • Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities

  • Exercises influence on peers in upholding school ideals.

  • Contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school.

  • Is able to delegate responsibilities.

  • Exemplifies positive attitudes about life.

  • Inspires positive behavior in others.

  • Demonstrates academic initiative.

  • Successfully holds positions of responsibility, conducting business effectively and efficiently, and without prodding, demonstrates reliability and dependability.

  • Is a leader in the classroom, at work, and in school or community activities.

  • Is thoroughly dependable in any responsibility accepted.

SERVICE

The criterion of service is often defined in terms of value of voluntary contributions to school, classmates, and community as well as the student's attitude toward service.

The student who serves:

  • Is willing to uphold scholarship and maintain loyalty to the school.

  • Participates in some outside activity.  For example:  Girl Scouts; Boy Scouts; church groups; volunteer services for the aged, poor, or disadvantaged; family duties.

  • Volunteers dependable and well-organized assistance, is gladly available, and is willing to sacrifice to  offer assistance.

  • Cheerfully and enthusiastically renders any requested service to the school.

  • Is willing to represent the school in community activities.

  • Does committee and staff work without complaint.

  • Shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers and students.

CHARACTER

Positive as well as negative aspects of character are considered.

The student of character:

  • Takes constructive criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously.

  • Consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, stability)

  • Upholds principles of morality and ethics.

  • Cooperates by complying with school regulations concerning property, programs, office, halls, etc.

  • Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability.

  • Shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others.

  • Observes instructions and rules, punctuality, and faithfulness both inside and outside the classroom.

  • Manifests truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, avoiding cheating in written work, and showing unwillingness to profit by the mistakes of others.

  • Actively helps establish a positive learning environment.
